At least 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities stated. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities said.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Residents have described the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, along with numerous weapons.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
