A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near Verona to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was found shortly later. The trio have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
