Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

The economist declared he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel disclosed his frequent communications with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward following their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed communications showed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood the economist's decision to depart.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the organization stated.

Congressional Action

This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on recently to approve a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on the case.

The measure will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for signature. He has stated he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the subject following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago included multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.

The emails indicated that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to connect the official to influential global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were released with the public, he expressed he took "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and fix connections with the individuals closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He headed the institution from five years and remains a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the organization.

Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
