Igor Jesus Fires a Brace as Nottingham Forest Round Off European Campaign with Win over Hungarian Opponents

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in all competitions for the club this campaign.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives hosts a first-half lead.
  • The striker's fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Striker nets again with a sharp finish in the second half.
  • James McAtee rounds off a great performance with a penalty.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as Nottingham Forest rounded off the group stage of the European competition with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

Forest had already secured a place in the next qualifying round and entered this fixture with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, although they needed several results to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give Forest fans belief that their team can come through the home-and-away tie to reach the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the upright with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second shortly after – the striker firing an effort in at the back post for his tenth strike of the season.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the defence and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest scored again when the impressive James McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the unfortunate Otvos inside the box on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Forest might face either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It's more than the result, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do well as a unit, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good one."

Team Breakdown: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a revelation for Forest in European competition this season with six of his eleven strikes coming in the Europa League.

This double also means he has got a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the prospect of competition for his position in attack could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently signed on loan and he was observing this match from the stands.

That may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was outstanding against the opposition, delivering two superb goals and generally being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and movement.

Jesus was not the only one in catching the eye, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from Manchester City last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

These encouraging performances will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome their London rivals on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just about displaying your ability.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another two and these are good signs."
