In excess of 60,000 Flee Sudan's City In the wake of Seizure by Rapid Support Forces Paramilitary Group, UN Says

Refugees escaping conflict in Sudan
Numerous seek to reach the settlement of Tawila but encounter harassment, extortion and abuse from fighters along the way

According to the United Nations refugee organization, more than 60,000 civilians have left the city in Sudan of el-Fasher, which was seized by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces during the weekend.

There have been mass executions and atrocities as militia members stormed the city after an extended blockade characterized by food shortages and intense shelling.

The exodus of those running from the conflict towards the community of Tawila, roughly 80km (50 miles) to the west of el-Fasher, had accelerated in the recent days, according to UNHCR spokesperson.

Survivors were narrating shocking stories of violence, featuring sexual violence, and the organization was having trouble to secure adequate housing and nourishment for them.

All children was suffering from nutritional deficiencies, she noted.

It is estimated that in excess of 150,000 individuals are presently stranded in el-Fasher, which had been the army's last bastion in the western part of Darfur.

The RSF has denied broad accusations that the killings in el-Fasher are based on ethnic factors and resemble a pattern of the Arab fighters attacking non-Arab populations.

However the paramilitary group has custodied one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been charged with on-the-spot executions.

The force shared footage revealing the member's apprehension after identification that he was behind the killing of multiple unarmed men near el-Fasher.

Digital platform has confirmed that it has suspended the profile connected to Lulu. It is not clear whether he had managed the account in his identity.

Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 following a vicious power struggle began between its army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The conflict has caused a starvation emergency and claims of mass killing in the Darfur area.

Over 150,000 persons have been killed in the conflict around the country, and approximately 12 million have left their residences in what the UN has termed the most extensive humanitarian emergency.

The capture of el-Fasher strengthens the territorial division in the country, with the RSF now in dominance of western Sudan and a large portion of adjacent Kordofan to the south, and the military occupying the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern regions along the coastal region.

The competing factions had been collaborators - coming to power together in a seizure of power in 2021 - but fell out over an internationally backed initiative to advance to civilian rule.
