Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins After Player Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat recorded eighty-six first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after guard Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful sports betting.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the allegations.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We investigated the matter and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office can't do.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."

Additional League Outcomes

In other games, Lakers player Luka Doncic scored more than 40 scores for the consecutive match in a row to start the season.

Following racking up 43 points in a season-opening loss to the Warriors, the Slovenian put up 49 points - to go with 11 rebounds and 8 assists - as the Los Angeles defeated the Timberwolves 128-110.

From Greece forward Antetokounmpo also had a big night with 31 points, 20 boards and seven passes in the Bucks' 122-116 victory at the Toronto Raptors.

Rockets were beaten 115-111 by the Detroit Pistons even with thirty-seven scores from Durant, while Victor Wembanyama had twenty-nine points, eleven boards and nine rejections in the San Antonio Spurs' overtime win over the Pelicans.
