The Chainsaw Man Film Leads American Box Office in First Weekend

Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? In the wake of the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in more than $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has officially crossed the $100M threshold globally, attaining a worldwide gross of over $108 million in its opening frame. This movie beat out the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Notable U.S. and Global Earnings

Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned over $18 million in North America after a powerful five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday take. Overseas, the produced by MAPPA film grossed $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to $60.4M under Sony ($43.1M overseas, $18.2M in the U.S.). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.

Parallels to Previous Successful Anime Films

Promotional firm an industry expert previously spoke, drawing parallels between the feature's anticipated earnings to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34 million in the North America in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18 million stateside. Reze Arc’s opening frame matches that marker, while its $108 million worldwide total is now positioned just behind the earlier film's over $166 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will achieve the earnings seen by blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a significant success for Sony.

Promotional Efforts Fuel Performance

The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to drive their supremacy at the cinema for anime films. The Reze Arc marketing campaign kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, unique experiences, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a significant involvement at New York Comic Con featuring never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and popular figures too after the final day of the event.

Looking Ahead

2025 stands as a significant period for anime, and for Sony, which has one more feature-length anime premiering in 2025 in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
